Carlos Sainz Sr. Launches Bid to Lead FIA, Eyes Presidency in 2025 Election
Carlos Sainz Sr., the legendary rally driver and father of F1's Carlos Sainz Jr., has officially announced his candidacy for the presidency of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). The election is scheduled for December 12, 2025, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan .
Sainz, a two-time World Rally Champion and four-time Dakar Rally winner, emphasized that his decision stems from a desire to give back to the sport that has defined his life. He stated, "This sport has given me everything. I believe now is the right time in my career to take this step" .
Addressing potential concerns about a conflict of interest due to his son's active career in Formula 1, Sainz assured that he would step back from any involvement in his son's professional affairs to maintain the integrity of the FIA. "He's not a child anymore; he's been in F1 for a decade now. If I go ahead with this project, our relationship will change, of course. The FIA is a very serious entity, and there will be no conflict" .
Sainz's candidacy comes at a time when the current FIA President, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, faces criticism over various controversies during his tenure. Sainz aims to bring a fresh perspective and restore trust within the motorsport community. "I would like to see the future of the FIA as an entity that is really appreciated and respected by everybody" .
The motorsport world will be closely watching as the election approaches, with Sainz's extensive experience and commitment to the sport positioning him as a strong contender for the FIA presidency.
