The Illinois Senate Race

The 2026 U.S. Senate race in Illinois has rapidly become one of the most consequential political contests in the Midwest. For the first time in nearly three decades, the seat long held by Dick Durbin is open, triggering a cascade of ambition among Chicago’s political elite and creating a rare opportunity for generational change in the state’s Democratic leadership.
For political strategists watching the race from Chicago to Washington, three names define the early battlefield: Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton and two sitting members of Congress, Robin Kelly and Raja Krishnamoorthi.
Durbin’s retirement transformed what would have been a routine re-election into a generational reset for Illinois Democrats. Dick Durbin served as Senate Democratic whip and one of the party’s most influential legislators, making the seat a coveted prize for the next generation of leadership.
In a deep-blue state like Illinois, the real fight is the Democratic primary. Whoever emerges from that contest will likely become the next U.S. senator.
That reality is why the Democratic field has quickly consolidated around major statewide figures.
The Frontrunner - Juliana Stratton, Lieutenant Governor
The candidate entering with the clearest institutional advantage is Juliana Stratton, Illinois’ lieutenant governor since 2019.
Stratton carries the benefit of executive branch visibility and, more importantly, the political infrastructure tied to Governor J.B. Pritzker’s statewide network. That network includes donors, labor alliances, and a formidable campaign apparatus built during two successful gubernatorial elections.
Strategically, Stratton’s lane is progressive governance backed by establishment resources. Her messaging emphasizes reproductive rights, criminal justice reform, and expanded social programs such as Medicare-for-All-style coverage and higher federal wage standards.
The strategic question surrounding Stratton is turnout:
Can the executive branch coalition translate into enthusiasm among Chicago’s progressive base while simultaneously maintaining suburban moderates?
If the Pritzker political machine performs as expected, Stratton begins with a structural advantage.
The Highly Favoured - Raja Krishnamoorthi, U.S. Representative
Representing Illinois’ 8th congressional district since 2017, Krishnamoorthi has built a reputation as a pragmatic Democrat focused on economic competitiveness, technology policy, and national security oversight.
Cultivateing strong fundraising networks and national visibility through his work on congressional committees dealing with corporate accountability and international competition. Polling has placed him among the early leaders in the Democratic primary, though a large share of voters remain undecided.
His campaign has framed the Senate bid as an opportunity to strengthen America’s economic leadership while expanding opportunity in Illinois’ growing technology and manufacturing sectors.
Robin Kelly, U.S. Representative
Representing Illinois’ 2nd congressional district, Kelly has long been associated with policy efforts focused on public safety, healthcare access, and gun violence prevention.
Before joining Congress, she served in the Illinois legislature and held party leadership roles within the state Democratic organization. Her campaign message emphasizes community investment and economic equity, themes she argues resonate strongly across Chicago’s South Side and the surrounding suburbs.
Kelly’s Senate run has also triggered significant political ripple effects: her decision to seek the seat opened a competitive race to replace her in Congress.
